What is eco-friendly hardwood flooring?
Eco-friendly hardwood can be refinished or restored at least once, making it better for the environment.
Eco-friendly hardwood floors can be considered an environmentally friendly practice for several reasons:
- Prolongs the Lifespan: By resanding the floors, you can remove surface imperfections, scratches, and wear, thus extending the lifespan of the hardwood. Resanding wood floors reduces the need for replacing the flooring, which can be a resource-intensive process.
- Reduces Waste: When hardwood floors become damaged or excessively worn, the typical alternative is to replace them. Resanding and refinishing the hardwood eliminates the need for disposal and reduces the overall environmental impact.
- Saves Resources: Manufacturing new hardwood flooring requires timber harvesting, which may affect forests and ecosystems. Resanding and refinishing existing hardwood floors helps conserve these valuable resources by reducing the demand for new hardwood products.
- Less Energy Intensive: The energy required to resand and refinish a hardwood floor is generally much lower than the energy needed to produce, transport, and install new flooring. This reduction in energy consumption can have a positive environmental impact.
- Avoids Harmful Chemicals: Some eco-friendly hardwood floor finishes and sealers are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and harmful chemicals. By resanding and refinishing, you can maintain healthy indoor air quality and control the choice of eco-friendly finishes.
- Sustainable Practices: Some hardwood flooring is sourced from sustainably managed forests or reclaimed wood sources. By resanding these floors, you continue to support sustainable forestry and reclaimed wood initiatives, promoting eco-friendly practices.
- Cost-Effective: In some cases, resanding and refinishing wood floors is more cost-effective than replacing the flooring, making it a practical choice for homeowners and businesses. However, it will depend on the hardwood floors.
Please remember that the eco-friendliness of resanding wood floors depends on the quality and type of the hardwood flooring.
There are two types of hardwood flooring: engineered hardwood and solid timber hardwood. The top layer, also known as the wear layer of hardwood floors, must be thick enough to be sanded.
When choosing engineered hardwood flooring, check the top layer thickness. A good wear layer will be 3.2 mm or higher. Engineered hardwood floors with a thin 2. mm wear layer are not suitable to be refinished and therefore, are not considered Eco-friendly.
